Nastra, Mythnium’s luminescent moon, rose slowly over the horizon and cast the landscape in a strange gray glow. Le’am had been walking for so long he’d lost track of time. He wasn’t even sure of the direction they were traveling until Nastra rose. When he saw they were walking toward the rising moon, he realized they were walking deeper into the Walker Mountains.

“This isn’t the way to Si’Cri Mountain.”

The God-keeper said nothing, so Le’am continued, “Are we going somewhere else first?”

The older willow pointed to a wide level area on the other side where no trees grew.

“There is a holy place there. That is our destination by Inda’s rise.”

Le’am frowned. “That is a long way to go by the first sunrise. Why the rush?”

The older Willow sighed heavily. “We must reach Si’Cri Mountain by the time Nastra next shines her face on us.”

Le’am pressed, “but I don’t understand.”

“Come along. You will understand when it is time to understand.”

Le’am stopped and planted his feet, his hands clenched at his sides. “No. Tell me how traveling in the wrong direction will get us to Si'Cri Mountain by nightfall. Tell me. I know you can’t compel me to follow you forever; I can see the strain touching the currents puts on you. You're exhausted.”

The older Willow raised her eyebrows. “A good observation from one who does not touch the currents.”

She shrugged her shoulders, “Very well. I will explain. As we walk.”

Together, the two followed a narrow path in the moonlight.

“That holy place has a portal. I can use the portal to get us to Si’Cri Mountain today with time to spare.”

“But what is the rush… Time to spare… I don’t understand. The Choosing isn't for several more days.”

The God-keeper nodded her head, “I know. I wanted to wait and explain this to the three of you all at once, but I can see that will not work for you. My predecessor is dying. He is being called to the gods. They will collect his soul with Nastra’s rise tomorrow night.”

She paused as she carefully walked along the trail, avoiding large rocks that littered the path.

"It is my predecessor who will choose my replacement. I must get the three of you to him before he joins the god."

“If I’m not chosen, then I could be home relatively quickly,” Le’am stated, suddenly brighter, confident that his lack of enthusiasm in the gods would be enough to disqualify him.

“No.”

“No?”

“No. My predecessor will not reveal the one he’s chosen. He will choose, at the god’s direction. Then he will bless each of you, but only one of you will get the Blessing of the Keeper. The three of you will then undergo three cycles of training. You will still prove yourselves to me and to the gods. Then the one with the blessing will be revealed.”

“I don’t understand.”

The older Willow nodded. “I know.”
